Cruising’s hottest topics: We know what’s on your mind

What about cruise travel got you either excited or furious in 2011? Here’s what you cared about most when it came to cruising – and Cruise Critic:

The controversial Royal Caribbean drinks package ranked as the top topic for conversation on Cruise Critic’s forum (and interestingly, when the cruise line announced that its Independence of the Seas, now based year-round from Southampton, will change to a winter deployment in the Caribbean beginning next fall, it’s abolishing the program altogether). Helen Skelton’s Polar Challenge begins

She left the starting point at 83 degrees south at 9.55am today (January 4), travelling on a specially-constructed ice bike, along with her co-adventurer Niklas Norman, a winter sports expert from Norway.

It follows a series of delays for the pair, who arrived in the Antarctic several days later than scheduled due to the severe snowstorms that hit the region.

Originally, the pair had planned to begin their trek on New Year’s Day.

Skelton said: “Bad weather delayed the start of my challenge by four days and that means I now have less time to reach the South Pole, so the sooner I get going the more likely I am to finish.

Sure, Baldwin was relying on cliches and ignorance when when tried to compare American Airlines to Greyhound but sadly, he was just wrong. Greyhound, which is undergoing a bit of a revival, is actually really nice.

American Airlines doesnt offer leather seats. Greyhound does.

American Airlines charges $10 to use its wifi.

Weekend Getaways in Portland

By Jessica Spiegel
Special to Lost Girls

Portland has long been one of those cities that seems to percolate in the mind of a certain kind of traveler, and since its a relatively small city it never quite bursts onto the national scene to a degree that people get bored of hearing about it. Travelers who are drawn here love the food scene, the laid back vibe of the city, and the easy access to natural wonders within a few hours of downtown Portland.

There are great day trips from Portland if you dont want to be away from the city for too long including tasting tours of Willamette Valley wineries and a drive up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory overlooking Mt. S
